34 - Go Play in the Puddles with Ricardo Martinez
Ricardo Martinez II has one of the biggest 9-1-1 related podcasts out there. He's the founder of the #IAM911 movement and the host of the Dare to be Great virtual events for 911 professionals, plus he loves to play in puddles with his kids. He's my guest today on the podcast...
ABOUT THE GUEST
Ricardo Martinez II is a creative individual who is using his skills in writing, design, and podcasting to tell the stories of those he works with. For 13 years he has answered the call of a 9-1-1 dispatcher and recently accepted a new position with INdigital telecom as a 9-1-1 systems trainer and designer. Throughout his years in dispatch he was able to go to school where he received an Associate’s in web development through Baker College, a Bachelor’s in graphic design through Full Sail University as well as a Master’s in new media journalism in March of 2013.Before starting his Master’s program he launched Jabber Log, a blog about current events and his life stories. His personal blog posts became a hit with his audience and one such post even appeared on WordPress.com’s “Freshly Pressed” section on their main page. From there his blog opened doors that included promotions for businesses, artists and musicians. Once he started his Master’s program he began doing multimedia stories that can be found on his YouTube channel. Through this program he discovered podcasting. It spawned a series that tells the stories of those in the field of emergency services. He then created a podcast version of a segment on his blog called Within the Trenches, a section of writing based on his experience as a 9-1-1 dispatcher. He launched Kickstarter campaign to raise $1,500 for the equipment needed for a show that would feature the stories of 9-1-1 dispatchers. The campaign was funded and can now be found at www.thejabberlog.com. His goal is to tell the story of everyone he meets.“I believe that everyone has a story to tell. I want to do everything I can to bring that story to life.” - Ricardo

31- What Makes a Good Officer go Bad? with Marlon Marrache
Why do some good cops go bad? What are the circumstances that cause this to happen? And how do these situations get prosecuted, and do agencies ever get it wrong? Tune in for my conversation with Marlon Marrache today on the First Responder Wellness Podcast and you'll hear answers to these questions a lot more.
ABOUT MARLON MARRACHE
Sergeant Marlon Marrache recently retired from the Los Angeles Police Department after 24 years of service. He now is focused full time on helping agencies and individual officers understand the internal affair process. According to Marlon, “There is so much more work to be done. We need to teach Supervisors how to investigate IA complaints. We need to teach officers their rights.” He is a co-instructor for our Internal Affairs/Officer-Involved Shooting Investigations course with the Savage Training Group.
Marlon’s 24 years at LAPD included 12 years of Police Misconduct Investigation, adjudication, and examination experience. Much of his experience comes from when Marlon was assigned to Internal Affairs (IA) in a prosecutorial role, representing the Chief of Police conducting Board of Rights, a unique Tribunal Hearing (the only agency with such a process in the nation). The numerous cases he tried involved “False & Misleading” allegations and termination was at issue.
Marlon’s passion for discipline came early in his career when he was preparing cases for Court Marshals & Non-Judiciary Punishment (aka: Captain’s Mast) when he was in active duty in the U.S. Navy back in 1995. After joining the LAPD in July 1998, working as a patrol officer, then promoted to Sergeant in January 2007, his passion was reenergized when he was chosen to work ORS and IA.
Marlon possesses a Juris Doctorate from Pacific Coast University, School of Law and was going to become a full time Police Attorney until he was offered this recent promotion. Meanwhile, Marlon has been retained as a Subject Matter Expert and will continue to share his knowledge with students everything there is to know about IA investigations which he considers a very untapped subject matter.
In 2023, Marlon launched a podcast called Internal Affairs: A Police Podcast. Marlon interviews officers who have been on all sides of an I.A., from investigators to the subject officers themselves. This podcast is the only place you can get a behind the scenes look into what really happened in some well known cases.

Rev. Jeffery Gallagher is a Chaplain for the Tolland Fire Department in Connecticut and he is the Lead Chaplain for the Connecticut State Police. When he was first considering becoming a chaplain, he told the fire chief that he wanted to be more than just the "banquet chaplain" who prays over the Christmas banquet. With no prior experience working with first responders he knew he needed some training and was able to take classes in CISM, Mental Health First Aid, QPR (as a trainer), IAFF Peer Support, IAFF Behavioral Health Awareness, Tactical Emergency Casualty Care, he took the Federation of Fire Chaplains Essentials course as well as the National Fallen Firefighters Line of Duty Death course.
Today on the podcast we talk about his work as a Chaplain and how it has impacted him and those he works with.
ABOUT REV. JEFFERY GALLAGHER
I am an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and have served churches in Maine and Connecticut for over 20 years. I am currently the Senior Pastor of the United Congregational Church of Tolland, Connecticut. As part of my work beyond the church, I serve as the Chaplain of the Tolland Fire Department and the Lead Chaplain for the Connecticut State Police. I have been in both of these Chaplaincy roles for about 7 years.
In addition to my work as a Pastor and Chaplain, I am the Director of the Tolland TOPSoccer program (for children with special needs), a runner, and I have hiked 41 of the 48 mountains in New Hampshire's White Mountains that are over 4,000' tall (hoping to finish next year!).
